Textin'

Have shamelessly pilfered the idea from this post from Stratford Girl, who I do believe was inspired by a chap by the name of Brennig. Anyway, thought I'd give it a go in a slightly modified version using received texts, because my phone is set up to only store the last 20 sent messages (has to be, otherwise the memory would explode I think!). So I fired up Nokia PC Suite and copy-pasted like a champ.

How many texts?! I only got this phone at the end of last year, and I've certainly deleted half as many again.

Lost and found

"Phew" is all I've got to say. After clicking on the usual address, and finding an error page, I worried frantically at what could have happened to Jane's blog. Had she abandoned us here in the world of Blog, so soon after making so many darling interweb friends? Or had something more sinister happened? Well, no, it's just that the dear girl has decided her blog needs an address worthy of its owner. If you were wondering where she'd gone, you can find her at: dozymare.blogspot.com.

The blog arriving at platform 2 ...

A new arrival in my blogroll and I'm all pleased. A long-standing (see how I tactfully didn't employ the world "old" - that's tactfully for both parties) real life (TM) friend has joined the world of Blog. Check out her embryonic blogworld here.

Oh, a prize

The charming Princesse Ecossaise has seen fit to give me a blog award. I am très touchée [blush]. The lovely lass included Attention All Shipping in her list of five schmooze-tastic blogs. I have the power of schmooze! Hurrah.

The illustrious (!) Power of Schmooze Award was founded on 2 July 2007, by Mike at Ordinary Folk, to recognise those bloggers who are "gifted in the ability to schmooze", schmoozing being "to converse casually, especially in order to gain an advantage or make a social connection". Hmm, not sure about the gaining and advantage, not with my ramblings of an only half-connected mind ;)). Anyway, you can find out more here.

So now it now befalls me to nominate a further five worthy bloggers who I feel are very much entitled to add this prestigious little badge to their blogs. Here goes...
  • Stratford Girl, because even though she's only new to this blogging lark, she has already regaled us with stories of puking dogs and paperclips in her Fox's biscuits (just the paperclips in the biscuits, of course).
  • Jo, because she lives on a boat and she has a big heart, and a lovely dog called Paddy.
  • Willie, because I love to read his latest pronouncements on music and because he's one of the most interesting people I know, and one of the most intelligent, and because our friend Jane describes him as "slightly eccentric". And, most importantly, because we both love curry.
  • Polly, because I have been dropping in on her blog for a while, and I love her blog's name.
  • My brother, because when he makes the effort to post he often makes me smile.
I also must give out some special prix du jury to:
Princesse Ecossaise, she's such a sweet wee thing
Miss Despina who is more adventurous than I, she's living in Prague!

I carried a watermelon

Anyone with any semblance of cinema culture will instantly know what I'm talking about here... What, you don't know? Dirty Dancing of course, which is cult viewing as far as I'm concerned. The other night I decided it had been quite long enough since I'd indulged my sad habit so I stuck it in the DVD player and wallowed in girly nostalgia.

In fact, this film holds a special place in my heart. When I was sixteen I visited Wisconsin, USA on a youth exchange trip. Students from Wisconsin University have the possibility to study one semester in my home town, and from there came the idea that a youth exchange between our town and UW towns could be a good idea. So off we went. I stayed with Jim & Marcy along with my friend Jane. (I'm getting there, hang on.)

One evening Jim & Marcy were invited to their GP's retirement party so Jane and I were home alone. In a big house with a big garden mostly surrounded by corn fields. In the middle of a tornado weather warning. And we, for some unfathomable reason, decided to watch America's Most Wanted on TV. Naturally we worked ourselves into near hysteria, and had to watch Dirty Dancing to calm ourselves down. Later that same week, we bought watermelons at the supermarket. And carried them. :)

It has since become a truly cult film for Jane and me. Brings back many happy memories.

Wedded at last

Time to do some catching up here, but where to begin? We are now back at base camp after two weeks away, first in Scotland then in the Sologne region of France (where hubby's dad lives).

So, Edinburgh... We had a great time but it was a bit of a big rush as usual. The main reason for the trip was Anne and Garry's wedding. Anne and I have been friends since playgroup. Anyone around my age will know what playgroup is and will thus know that means we've known each other since we were about 3½! So I couldn't possibly miss her wedding. Especially as it has been such a long time coming and was postponed from March to allow for the arrival of baby #3! See some pics here. It was a lovely day, warm and sunny and very enjoyable. I was really pleased to see two school friends there too, we'd somewhat lost touch but I am determined not to let their email addresses disappear from my contacts list this time! Hubby and I had such a good time. I had a bit too good of a time and was one of the living dead the next day, but that's another story not to be told here.

Seen on Boatwoman's blog - a little about me

Right, I'm posting this then I'm done with the daft question things.

Are your parents married or divorced? Married, for nearly 34 years!
Do you believe in heaven? I do
Have you ever come close to dying? I don't think so.I've come close to a couple of nasty accidents though.
What jewellery do you wear 24/7? None.
Do you eat the stems of broccoli? No.
Do you wear makeup? Of course, have to have my warpaint on!
Would you ever have plastic surgery? I hope I'll never be horribly disfigured and need any.
What do you wear to bed? My jim-jams.
Have you ever done anything illegal? I regularly exceed the speed limit on the motorway.
Can you roll your tongue? I can.
Do you have a boyfriend or girlfriend? I have a husband.
Do you believe in abortions? I agree with Bill, they should be "safe, legal and rare".
What is your hair colour? Brown.
Future child's name, boy and girl? Boy-child and girl-child.
Do you smoke? Nope. I fume sometimes, but usually that's when the first car in the queue falls asleep at the lights.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? Back to Hawaii, and also New Zealand.
Do you sleep with stuffed animals? No, I sleep with a live animal!
If you won the lottery, what would you do first? Treat my parents.
Gold or silver? Gold.
Hamburger or hot dog? Homemade beefburgers like we had today.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be? It would be a short rest of my life! Can I have "any food Mum cooks"?
City, beach or country? - Beach with mountains, like north western Mallorca.
What was the last thing you touched? I suppose we exclude the computer keyboard from this? The dog.
When was the last time you cried? When I watched that thing on BBC 2 about widows.
What colour are your pants? It depends. Today they are ... stripey.
Ever been involved with the police? What, the Polis? No. I don't speed fast enough.
What's your favourite shampoo/conditioner and soap? This is a silly question. I'm using Boots Botanics at the moment, and Dove shower gel. I don't have a favourite.
Do you talk in your sleep? No.
Ocean or pool? Ocean.
What's your favourite song at the moment? Me and My Monkey - Robbie Williams. My iPod is stuck on it. :)
Have you ever had a cavity? Yes.
Window seat or aisle seats? Aisle, slightly more leg room.
Ever met anyone famous? Yes, more than once.
Do you feel that you've had a truly successful life? I haven't finished it yet!
Do you twirl your spaghetti or cut it? Twirl.
Are you self-conscious? To an extent.
Have you ever ridden in an ambulance? No.
Last gift you received? A chicken from Hélène.
What occasion did you receive your gift? No occasion.
Last thing you spent lots of money on? Qualify "lots". 3 cases of Bordeaux wine. My wedding dress. Maui. The house.
Where do you live? In my house.
Last wedding attended? Mine, 26 Aug 2006.
Favourite restaurant? Curry.
What is your favourite kind of car? Oh bad question. In my total-and-complete-fantasy world, it would be an Aston Martin DB9. In my fantasy world, it's an Audi RS4. In my slightly-less-fantasy world it would be a flexfuel V50, in a-bit-closer-to-reality world a Scenic, and in real life I LOVE my Renault Clio.
What's your least favourite chore? Ironing, it is the devil's idea.
Favourite drink? Tea.

Check out Jo's answers here.

A "bus" and the NHS ...

The day started with an adventure as Hubby and I travelled into Edinburgh on the "bus". The reason for this being my hair appointment which was at nine. Dad was quite adamant that this "bus" thing would be faster into town than the car. I'm not quite sure how because the places where the traffic jams were had no bus lanes, so I don't see how it was quicker than a car, but whatever. Mum assured me that you can't catch anything on the "bus" so it's OK. Anyway, had caramel highlights put in too because they were doing an offer of 40% off colour in February. Am pleased.

Hubby and I then went to John Lewis and purchased oven gloves and a standy up cheese grater. Exciting. There we bumped into Anne which was a lovely surprise. Her tummy is very full of baby #3, who is due on 17 March. She looked well and was excited about her wedding plans. However, she'd received notice from her employer (by email, which they are not allowed to do!) that the store where she works is closing and that they are all out of a job, just three weeks before she was due to go on maternity leave. Didn't really have time to talk further about that but sounded a bit unfair!

We travelled on another "bus" to come back home. It stopped at evil Tesco.

On return home I called NHS direct or 24 or whatever they are called and unsurprisingly they said that yes Hubby would need a tetanus injection just to be on the safe side, and no it couldn't really wait until we went back to France. So Dad kindly drove us to the Emergency dept at the infirmary and Hubby had his first encounter with the NHS. We waited for less than an hour, if you can believe that! Waited in the sweltering heat, I might add. If they turned the heating down in hospitals I can think of two major benefits: the reduced heating bill would probably eliminate NHS debt; and the germs wouldn't breed quite so well.

In the evening we headed back into Edinburgh and got caught out by some surprise road works that had appeared since morning. Grrr. We went round to Willie's then up to Broughton Street and Kushie's for a rather pleasant curry.

Carmen Jaeger

This news deserves a post all of its own:

Jeni and Andreas Jaeger are the proud parents of Carmen! She arrived today at 9.28am, and weighs 2.37kg, measuring 48cm.

Welcome to the world, Carmen. You're a lucky girl because you have a great mum and dad, and your family is full of lovely people. And your parents have some pretty cool friends too :)

We can now go "official" in France

Our French marriage certificate arrived today finally. So now we can go "official" here. Of course, that means that I'll have to make up my mind on what my name's going to be ... No rush, right?

Round to Jo's tonight to celebrate his birthday, which was on Tuesday. Then it's the braderie (sort of yard sale/car boot sale thing) on Sunday morning. Early on Sunday morning. I need to seriously set aside time tomorrow to go through what we'll try and flog. Hope we make enough for a nice meal out!

Poor Hélène still not properly moved into her new flat. The painter and the plumber seem in absolutely no hurry to finish all the work. Lazy g1ts.

Been a busy week at work. I did the stats tonight before I left - September's figures are comparable to YTD. Which means we've been more productive than usual, as we're down to 2, and we have project management, daily admin, satisfaction surveys and all the rest to do on top of the translations. That's given me a boost because it's been pretty hectic all month.

Oh, and this is something I should already have posted: to those of you who pray, please remember Joffrey and Sophie Catteau who lost their son Elie last weekend.

And on that rather low note I'll leave it there for now. Be back on Sunday (maybe!) to gloat about how much easy cash we made. :)

The Incredible Adam Spark

Book by Alan Bisset. Read it. It was one of my 3 for 2s from the other week. Really did enjoy it.

Have now resolved to finish all the books I've started before I 1/ start anymore, 2/ buy anymore, crucially. Don't know how long I'll hold out. In fact, I might do quite well because I'm skint so that should keep new book purchases down.

We helped Hélène move yesterday. Poor Hélène, in her new flat the decorating's not finished and there's no electricity! The chap who's doing it says he'll be done by Tuesday though so not long until she'll be all settled in.

Still no progress on wedding thank you cards. Got to do them. If I finish them by Monday night I might get to the post office on Tuesday to post them!

Still no news on missing iPod.

Think I'll take the dog for a walk.

Fish & Chips tonight

Not forgetting the mushy peas.

Spoke to Jeni last night at length. Her bump is growing mighty fast apparently. She sounded happy but a bit frazzled with work. Her maternity leave starts soon so she needs to get everything in place for while she's away.

Work for me is going better. We are installed in our new offices and, setting aside some teething troubles, it's incomparable to the mess we were in for the last two weeks. We don't have people digging up the ground right next to our office or knocking the walls down or (even better) digging through the main power cable into the building!!

Work for Hubby appears to be as inspirational as ever (not). Of course, he needs to get his CV sorted out so I can start finding him a job he'd like to do. As I don't really understand what he actually does currently, there is only so much of his CV I can write on his behalf.

We had the usual suspects round for drinks and nibbles on Friday. We finally met Delphine! She seems nice and Jo is happy and that's what counts. Everyone seemed good. It was a good evening.

I got a start on the wedding thank yous. Still have about fifty to do I reckon but at least I started. Mum says she'll pick up the photos tomorrow. I'm a bit jealous that other people will see them before we do but that's life.

Talking of weddings, we still don't have our French marriage certificate. I sent a rather pointed e-mail to the consulate in Edinburgh today to find out what they're playing at. It's not that I care about their stupid French paperwork (after all, we have the marriage certificate issued by the registrar in Scotland that's the main thing), but we actually need the French marriage certificate to sort out more stupid paperwork here. And some of it has to be done within a certain time after the wedding. French administrations, what can you say.

I read one of my 3 for 2 books. It was called Only Strange People Go To Church. I have to say I thought it was going to be better than it was. But it was an easy read and passed the time and did have a couple of funny moments. Don't buy it though you can have my copy.

I'm reading The Incredible Adam Spark now. It's much better. It's one of those "stream of consciousness" type books. It's a bit odd when you start but I'm quite well into it now and it's a good read. Buy it. Of course, I could offer to lend you my copy but I haven't finished yet.

Anyways I have to go my fish & chips are ready.

Should you happen across my blog

Welcome, unsuspecting web user. Welcome to the World of Lis.

Yes, this is my humble blog. Maybe I'll be quite good at updating this unlike my website. Ha ha ha.

Only time will tell.

As I don't have anything of note to say today and should really be doing other stuff (like defrosting the freezer -- be still my beating heart), here's a photo:

Yup, it's Fay enjoying a rather large glass of beer in Bruges. Cheers.
