Underage voters?!

It seems the Scottish Nationalists have invented another "populist" idea to lower the voting age to 16. I would wager it's just another fight to pick with Westminster (because any legislation altering the voting age must be decided in the UK parliament). When this crackpot idea falls flat, the Nationalists can whine about Westminster foiling their clever policies.

Sorry teenies, but most 16 and 17 year-olds are just not clued up enough to vote. Of course, most people over the age of 18 aren't clued up enough to vote either, but the law says they are allowed to so we just have to put up with it. When I become Supreme World Leader, anyone who bases their political and world views on what The Sun or The Daily Mail says will be stripped of their civic rights.

Heheheh.

Wow. Sounds just like America ... well, the newspaper part, not the 16-17 voter part. Then again, it sounds like we both have legislators that aren't all that 'clued up' either. :)

ooh, i do want to leave a comment. perhaps we've all forgotten what a genuine centre-left, progressive government might be like. after all, if you can work, you can get married, you can join the army and die, i can see why you might like to vote.

yes, it's probably motivated to pick a fight with Westminster, but at the same time it's an opportunity to sketch out how an independent Scotland might be different. when it comes to the retained areas, I think the Nats are obliged to act as the opposition.

my tuppence, anyway...

Here here.

I didn't realise your hubbie was French - I've just been catching up on your posts. Hope you are feeling more cheerful and that the insomnia has improved. I get like that sometimes - brain whirring away with nowhere to go at 4 am. It sucks.

@William - but the government is trying to ban people working at 16, and make them stay in education. Seeing as there's more to learn than a few years ago, I see there point. On the other hand, you only really need to know how to look things up on the internet.

I don't have a problem with 16 year-olds voting, but they shouldn't be allowed in the armed forces.

On the subject of the Scottish Nationalists....they are a good reason why I'll be leaving Scotland. If you see the English as immigrants, then they aren't dissimilar to the BNP (public bigotry not allowed, but you just know they're like that in private).
